Position Description:

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Utah State University (USU), together with the USU Ecology Center, invites applications for a position as non-tenure-track Professional Practice Assistant Professor in Statistical Consulting, beginning January 1, 2025. This position allocates half time to providing statistical consulting to the Ecology Center and half time to teaching and advising graduate students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (MAST). Teaching for MAST will consist of (a) two senior/graduate-level applied statistics courses each year, ideally with ecology-related context and examples, and (b) graduate advising for MS Statistics students. We anticipate that this 9-month position will include an additional 1.5 months summer salary to provide half-time statistical consulting support to the Ecology Center during summer months. Additional summer salary is possible through research grants with collaborators.

Candidates with applied statistical consulting expertise are encouraged to apply. We particularly seek candidates whose expertise includes statistical collaborations involving Ecology, Biology, or Natural Resources applications. Preference will be given to candidates equipped to teach courses within the departmental applied statistics curriculum at USU (see USU General Catalog at https://catalog.usu.edu/ and course listings for STAT), especially with ecology-related context and examples.

USU supports dual career applicants and provides a Dual Career Assistance program: https://www.usu.edu/provost/faculty-recruitment/dual-career-assistance.

In addition to this position, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Utah State University anticipates conducting multiple faculty searches during the 2024-2025 academic year, to start in 2025. Please check the following link for updates: https://www.usu.edu/math/jobsearch.

Review of applications begins August 1, 2024, with the position open until filled.

Responsibilities

The position will be 70% teaching, 15% research, and 15% service. These percentages regard statistical consulting with Ecology Center graduate students to be a teaching activity, and consulting with Ecology Center faculty to be a service activity. Authorship on papers resulting from consulting work counts as research, consistent with standard practice in MAST. Duties include providing statistical consulting to Ecology Center graduate students and faculty, collaborating with Ecology Center clientele on publications and research presentations, teaching applied statistics courses in MAST, working with masters-level Statistics students on thesis-style research projects, and providing service to the departments and institution.

Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Statistics, Ecology, Biology, Natural Resources, or closely related field. Demonstrated teaching and/or consulting and/or research experience in Statistics plus research experience in Ecology, Biology, Natural Resources or closely related field.

Preferred qualifications: Record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals in statistics, ecology, or related fields. Applied, interdisciplinary experience in research or consulting
